1️⃣5️⃣2️⃣ • I’ve been talking a lot about #PPEPollution over the last few days, but what is the true scale of the issue? • Well, how about this… • At the start of lockdown, I did a litter pick around my local industrial estate – I found 6️⃣ plastic gloves… • 3 weeks ago, I did a litter pick along the same route – I found 1️⃣7️⃣1️⃣ plastic gloves. • Today, I did the same route again – I found 1️⃣5️⃣2️⃣ plastic gloves AND face masks. • What I find most shocking, and frightening, about PPE pollution is just how quickly it has plighted the environment. • 4 months ago, finding face masks was unheard of – now, I’m finding them in double figures. • We have to work together, we have to be responsible with our waste and we have to be resilient against this relentless plague of PPE. • This is just one small area of North Cornwall… what is everyone else finding? • #PPEPollution #LockdownLitter #COVID19

!THE PLASTIC PANDEMIC! • We are constantly warned of a ‘second wave’, and yet, a new plastic tide has already risen… • The very purpose of #PPE is to protect ourselves, and if not more importantly, other people. • The exact same applies to the end-of-life of our PPE too. It is up to us to be responsible with our used PPE and in turn, protect others and the planet. • ‍♀️ This week, with @bythecompassuk, we went for a #PaddleForPPE along the Camel Estuary – which flows directly into the Atlantic Ocean. • Within the first 5 minutes, we found a face mask in the water. • The saving grace of #COVID19 has been our unity; the whole world has faced the virus together. PPE is in all of our lives; we use it or see it every day. • But it is for this very reason that we can all do something about it. It is those daily, individual steps that happen on a global scale that is going to be our greatest ally in this fight against plastic. • Alex Stevenson – @bythecompassuk • #PlasticPandemic #PlagueOfPPE #PPEPollution #IAmABeachGuardian

WHAT A WEEKEND • The only thing that could make this glorious sunshine and beautiful blue sky any better would be a county wide recycling campaign, incredible collaborations and an extreme beach clean, ghost net excavation… • OH WAIT – that’s what we did! • ♻️ From preventing thousands of plastic plant pots and garden furniture from being land-filled or burnt with the second ever #GreatPotAmnesty at @trevisker_garden_centre with the @oceanrecoveryproject and @odysseyinnovation… • To joining @turnthetidecornwall and eco-cameraman extraordinaire @youngarnie for an EXTREME beach cleaning mission to extract a ghost net from a cave! • I’m so grateful that I get to spend my days doing the things that I love, surrounded by awesome people. • How’s that for a bit of #SelfcareSunday?

‘HOW THE PANDEMIC HAS CREATED AN ECO CRISIS’ • Thank you so much to @closeronline for the involvement in such an important and timely feature. • Before COVID-19, finding PPE on our beach cleans and litter picks was almost unheard of… • ⛔️ But just last week, we found 171 plastic gloves during an hours litter pick! • ♻️ ‘Despite predictions that the pandemic might lead to a green revolution, it seems single-use PPE is only adding to the threat to the environment.’ • ‘Experts suggest that if everyone in the UK wears a single-use face mask every day for a year, we’ll create an additional 57,000 tonnes of plastic packaging – not including the mask itself!’ • Mark Spalding, president of @theoceanfoundation tells Closer, “Instead of using disposable PPE, the public can stay safe by wearing reusable fabric face masks and washing their hands regularly. We should reserve single-use PPE for key workers and medical staff who need it and who can dispose of it safely in dedicated bins.” • #IAmABeachGuardian
